Geographically
the region is hilly, with the River Tweed flowing west to east through the
region. In the east of the region the area that borders the River Tweed is
flat and is known as 'The Merse'. The Tweed and its tributaries drain the
entire region with the river flowing into the North Sea at Berwick-upon-Tweed,
and forming the border with England for the last twenty miles or so of its
length.
The quieter months provide the ideal opportunity to try something different at your own speed. If you've always fancied a rural trek along a bridle path, saddle up with a local horse and guide. Switch from four wheels to two for a tour under your own horse power on sign-posted routes and quiet country lanes. Or take to the hills for a mountain bike ride on expertly-designed downhill tracks. Glentress, near Peebles, is rated as 'the best dedicated mountain bike centre in Britain' by Mountain Bike Rider Magazine.
Opportunities also abound for a variety of activities - archery, falconry, diving, clay pigeon shooting, quad bike riding and canoeing. All guaranteed to bring a rosy glow to your cheeks and a smile to your face. |
